Every year, students paste their Common App essay into UCAS and wonder why Oxbridge doesn't call. The two documents answer different questions. The Common App essay asks "who are you?", it rewards personal narrative and voice, and the best ones are often about small, ordinary moments. The UCAS statement asks "why this subject, and what have you done about it?", It rewards academic engagement: the reading beyond the syllabus, the project, the question you can't stop thinking about. A moving story with no academic substance reads as fluff to a UK tutor; a reading list reads as cold to a US officer. And note: UCAS now structures the statement as three specific questions, making the academic focus even more explicit. Applying to both systems means writing two genuinely different documents, and the Oxbridge deadline is October 15. We coach both. Should we move him to IB for better US admissions?" We get this question from parents more than almost any other, so here's the honest answer: the board matters far less than what you do within it. US and UK admissions officers evaluate you in context, they know CBSE percentages run differently from IB scores, they know what a 95% means at an Indian school versus a 38 in IB, and they recalibrate accordingly. Nobody gets rejected for being a CBSE student. What each board actually changes is the shape of your preparation: IB's structure (Extended Essay, TOK, internal assessments) naturally produces the research and writing samples that Western applications reward. CBSE and state boards leave more time outside class, which means your profile has to be built deliberately through competitions, projects, and initiatives; the board won't do it for you. IGCSE/A-Levels sit in between and map cleanly onto UK applications. The real question isn't "which board impresses colleges", it's "will this student build a strong profile within their board?" We've placed students from all three into Ivy League and Top 20 universities. The board never decided it. The work did. Switching boards mid-stream for admissions optics usually costs more than it gains; building smart within your current one almost always wins. Confused about your child's specific situation? The injury-taught-me-resilience arc, the "the children taught me more than I taught them" volunteer trip, "Webster's defines perseverance as...", the passion you've had "ever since you were young", and the moving tribute that reveals everything about your grandmother and nothing about you. An admissions officer has read each of these hundreds of times this season alone. If your first line could open anyone else's essay, it isn't doing its job. The Oxbridge deadline catches Indian families off guard every single year, on October 15, not January. If Oxford or Cambridge is on your list, your UCAS personal statement season starts now. For the US: Early Decision and Early Action close November 1, all University of California campuses close November 30, and Regular Decision runs January 1–15 depending on the school. One missed date is one permanently closed door, and there are no extensions. September: finish the essay, begin supplementals, confirm your recommenders. October: the Oxbridge deadline lands on the 15th, and your final SAT/ACT for early rounds happens now. November: ED/EA on the 1st, University of California on the 30th. December brings early results and RD polishing, and January closes the cycle. Missing one month's job and the next month gets harder.
